Jorge Hachumak

Healer and Conservationist

Seven years ago, Jorges was introduced to a small community on the banks of the Amazon River. The diversity of the surrounding jungle and the spirit of the people captured his heart and imagination. Two years later he was welcomed as their neighbor when he took ownership of property just half a mile from the village center. In the last five years Jorges has made numerous donations to all three village schools (primary, middle, and secondary/high school) consisting of books, school supplies, and mattresses for boarding students. Recently he was involved in establishing the village’s first recycling program. Jorges has also been assisting the elected village authorities to ensure local families’ land ownership is accurately recorded with the Peruvian government. This includes completing and submitting recent topographical survey data. Hachumak has also led village discussions on economic opportunities for families that could generate income while still protecting the local environment and wildlife.
